Chicago Bears Lance Briggs pleads guilty to leaving scene

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

lance-briggs-children-reading.jpgChicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs pleaded guilty yesterday to leaving the scene of an accident today in Skokie. As I told you back in August, Lance’s brand-new Lamborghini Murcielago, valued at over $300,000, was found at the side of a highway in Chicago, badly damaged.

In exchange for his guilty plea, Lance received one year supervision, 15 days of community service and a $485 fine.  A sentence of supervision is sort of like “probation-lite” in that if he completes the year supervision without incident, it will not be considered a conviction.  As part of his community service, Lance will have to teach school children about safe driving habits. Hopefully Lance will be able to keep on the straight and narrow and will not become a problem player like the Bears had in Tank Johnson.

The judge gave that specific community service because of the fact the children look up to Lance because he is an NFL player. Hopefuly Lance will receive a pamphlet or something to help him with the teaching, because obviously safe driving is not his strong suit. Lance does have a lot of experience working with children with his foundation, Briggs 4 Kidz.

It was probably a good idea for Lance to plead guilty and get this behind him. The Chicago Bears have gotten off to a rough start this season, in large part to the tremendous amount of injuries on the defense, including Lance. He did not practice again this week due to a hamstring injury and did not play in the last game against the Lions.

The Bears play the undefeated Green Bay Packers this Sunday night in Green Bay.

Chicago Bears Lance Briggs Leaves Scene after Crashing Lamborghini

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

lamborghini-lance-briggs-crash.jpg

Lucky to escape unhurt, Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs crashed his brand-new Lamborghini Murcielago, valued at over $300,000, early Monday morning. Briggs was reportedly traveling home to suburban Northbrook after visiting at least two nightclubs in Chicago, when he crashed at approximately 3:00 a.m. He then left his heavily damaged car on the side of the road, where it was found abandoned by the police.

Briggs, who admitted that he was driving the vehicle, is facing a misdemeanor charge for leaving the scene of an accident. He was also given tickets for failing to notify police of the crash and improper lane usage. He will have to head to court on October 4th.

There has been rampant speculation that alcohol may have played a role in the crash, which would explain why Briggs would not have called the police, or at the very least a tow-truck, after the accident. Because he did not speak with police until late Monday afternoon, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to prove a driving under the influence charge. It is also possible that Briggs was simply speeding, especially considering the fact that the Lamborghini can reach speeds of over 200 miles per hour.
