The morgue as a deterrent

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

linsday-lohan.jpgAs part as her community service sentence, Lindsay Lohan will be spending some time at the morgue. The idea being that if you see a dead body you will be less likely to engage in conduct that will cause you to end up there, like driving drunk or under the influence of other substances likely to cause you to drive in a less than stellar manner.

I suppose that spending a few days looking at dead bodies will go farther in convincing someone who has been convicted of driving under the influence about the consequences of their behavior than say, picking up garbage on the side of the road.

I don’t know what her tasks will be at the morgue, but I can’t imagine any job there would be pleasant. Interesting, sure, but unpleasant. There is some evidence that when people are faced with their own mortality or someone shown the consequences of their actions, it triggers something in their mind. Sort of the “ghosts of Christmas past” or “You were never born, George Bailey,” kind of thing.

I am hesitant to believe that Lindsay may have turned the corner on this addiction thing. Although she did have an alcohol slip-up recently, it appears that she is really working hard to change her lifestyle to one less centered on alcohol and partying and more centered on, you know, living.

What do you think? Is she on the right path for good or is it just a “wait and see” before she gets back into trouble?  I guess only time will tell.

Foxy Brown Sentenced to a Year in Jail

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

foxy-brown.jpg

Foxy Brown was ordered to serve a year in jail following a probation violation. Her original offense, for which she received the probation, involved an assault on two women at a nail salon.

She was also indicted for an alleged attack on a Brooklyn woman with a BlackBerry and for battery in connection with an incident at a Florida hair salon in February.

Brown, who is three months pregnant, is repotedly eligible for parole in eight months. If she is not let out early, she will have to give birth in jail and her child will be taken from her until her release.

Lane Garrison in Jail Awaiting Sentencing

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

lane-garrison.jpg

According to TMZ , former Prison Break actor Lane Garrison has been transferred to Twin Towers jail in Los Angeles.

He had been completing diagnosis testing for the purposes of sentencing at the California Institute for Men. The testing, which including a psychological evaluation, will help the judge determine whether Garrison is a good candidate for probation or if he should receive prison time. He will be sentenced on October 31st.

Garrison pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter in May following an accident in which he was driving drunk. One teenager was killed and two others were injured in the incident.

Michael Vick Pleads Guilty, Has Found Jesus

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

michael-vick.jpg

As expected, Michael Vick pleaded guilty to one count of “conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.” He previously admitted to financing “Bad Newz Kennels,” although he denied making money from gambling on dog fights. He also admitted that “collective efforts” of him and two other people resulted in the death of six or more dogs.

Although the plea agreement was for a recommended sentence of 12-18 months, the judge will have the final say on the sentence and will hand it down in December. This means that the judge could end up giving Vick a lighter sentence, especially if his actions between now and the sentencing date indicate he truly is on the path to redemption. The judge could also possibly give a higher sentence, but that is not likely.

On Monday, following his plea, Vick said, “dogfighting is a terrible thing.” He also said that he has “found Jesus” through this experience and has time to reflect and wants to redeem himself.

For the video of Vick’s apology, click here. What I found interesting was that on two separate occasions he said that he would not point the finger at anyone else and would take responsibility for his actions. He was likely taking some jabs at his co-conspirators who agreed to give up Vick to investigators. I also thought it was interesting that Vick, although claiming to be humble and turned over to God, continued to refer to himself in the third person.

What do you think about Vick’s apology? Do you think that it was genuine?

Lindsay Lohan Will Serve Only One Day In Jail

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

lindsay-lohan-george-rule.jpg

Lindsay Lohan entered into a plea agreement with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, pleading no contest to two misdemeanor counts of DUI and one count of reckless driving in exchange a sentence of four days in jail.

The judge then credited her one day time served from her second arrest and took away two of the days in jail in exchange for 10 hours of community service. That leaves Lohan with one day to spend in jail. She will also have to serve three years of probation. Any miscues while on probation will likely result in jail time.

Lohan also must refrain from using controlled substances and not “associate with people with controlled substances.” In order to comply with that requirement of probation, I think that Lindsay better find some new friends.
